Recommendations on how to get the Best out of Your Scents of the Wild Natural Botanical Soy Wax Candle
Helping you to achieve a cleaner, longer, safer burn & get a slightly stronger scent from your botanical soy candle.
Always choose a safe place for your soy wax candle jar to sit on a flat, fire-resistant surface, out of reach of children and animals, and away from draughts, curtains, furniture, etc.
Before burning your natural soy wax candle for the first time, trim the wick to 5mm. This will help to achieve a clean and even burn and prevent your wick from smoking or ‘mushrooming’.
Light your candle with a long match or gas lighter to ensure you don’t burn your fingers and create black marks on the jar. (Black marks won’t affect the burning of your candle, but they don’t look so pretty!)
The first time you use your botanical candle (180ml jar size), light it for at least 3 hours (but no more than 4 hours).
For the smaller candle (60ml jar size), 2 hours may be sufficient.
I know this may sound like a very long time, but it’s really important as this will ensure that you create a wide wax pool that reaches the full diameter of the jar.
Soy wax has a ‘memory’ and this will ensure that subsequent burns of your candle are even and that your candle doesn’t tunnel right down the middle, shortening the life of the candle significantly and impeding its ability to burn properly.
Creating a larger ‘melt pool’ of wax will also help you to get a stronger scent from your botanical candle.
So, on the first burn of your candle, cosy up with a good book or film, light your candle, and take some time out to relax!
After the initial burn of your candle, subsequent burn times should be kept to no more than 3 hours.
Before each lighting of your soy wax candle, ensure the wick is trimmed to 5mm to prevent smoking, mushrooming of the wick, and overheating of the jar due to a larger flame.
Soy wax burns cooler than paraffin wax, which means soy wax candles require a bigger wick to burn properly. Because of this, their wicks need to be trimmed more regularly than paraffin wax candles.
Your soy wax candle may ‘sweat’ (have wet patches) on top. This is common with 100% soy wax candles and nothing to worry about. It’s excess oils from the soy wax coming out in response to a change of temperature.
Cracks or ‘frosting’ may appear on your candle. This is also normal and common in natural soy wax candles as the wax responds to changes in air temperature.
When trimming your wick between burns, do not allow the wick trimming to fall into the wax as this can create a fire hazard.
If your wick moves off-centre: Extinguish the flame on your soy wax candle and allow to cool for a few minutes before gently manoeuvring the wick to re-centre.
Always keep your candle out of draughts to prevent the wick smoking and the candle overheating.
Don’t move your soy candle when it is lit.
Don’t allow the flame to touch the edges of the jar. If it’s doing this, extinguish your candle and then, once the candle has cooled, move it to a place without a draft or cut the wick shorter.
The glass jar will likely get hot after your soy wax candle has been burning for an hour or two. Do not touch the glass or attempt to pick your candle up and move it until you’ve extinguished your candle and the glass has cooled down.
Never leave your candle unsupervised.
Put the lid back on your natural soy wax candle after extinguishing the flame and between burns to keep debris (dust, hairs, etc) out of the wax. This will also help preserve the natural scent of your candle.
Discard your soy wax candle when the wick reaches 1/2” deep. (After your candle is finished, you can clean out your empty candle jar and recycle it or use it to store pens, crafting items, etc.)
Note: Don’t pour melted soy wax down your drains as it will set as it cools and may block your drains.
